PRECONCEPTION COUNCELINGPreconception care refers to the prospective planning for a pregnancy prior to conception.
Preconception care refers to interventions that aim to identify and modify biomedical, behavioral, and social risks to a woman’s health or pregnancy outcome through prevention and management
Ideally a pregnancy should be “by choice and not by chance” and “appointment and not by accident.”
PPC should be a rule rather than exception
OBJECTIVES:
Intended to assess normal health of a child bearing woman i.e.. complete health screening
To identify existing or emerging illness or disease which may have gone undetected before
Existing risks for the woman who may become pregnant
Existing risks which may affect a fetus if the woman does become pregnant
GOALS:
[at present only 5% patients receive PCC]
To provide treatment and information before pregnancy that can improve the woman’s health
Help reduce risks to her future baby
To achieve a full term pregnancy by preventing miscarriage, premature birth or still birth
Have a healthy baby in future
AIM:
“A HEALTHY BODY WITH A BALANCED DIET AND LIFE STYLE, TUNED BY PROPER EXERCISE IN THE PRECONCEPTIONAL STAGE CAN MAKE THINGS EASIER FOR THE MOTHERS DURING AND AFTER PREGNANCY”
